Primateriality

Our understanding of nature has inevitably been filtered through an anthropocentric lens and this distortion has historically put humans at the top species, and in the worst cases, as a distinct entity above nature itself. Our understanding of reality, particularly through science, has led to our mastery of elements and tools, though at a steep price. The age of humans has also brought about now irreversible changes, from the creation of radioactive objects with unimaginable half-lives, a new wave of mass species extinction, and an atmosphere that will continue to warm.

This sculpture plays upon the wideheld (though untrue) belief that humans are the only species to use tools. Here the primate seems to be holding a vine suspended from the ceiling beams. Upon closer inspection, the monkey is in fact creating the vine through braiding - demonstrating both the ability to envision a future, and create complex patterns.
