Petrifoot

Petrifoot (2021) is a sculpture inspired by a landscape photograph of people standing upon a large sculpted foot of the Buddha. The flora and fauna such as mosses, lichens and insects that naturally inhabit the limestone make the sculpture appear in close up as if it were too a landscape and from a distance, the form of the foot emerges. This stone was recycled from a previous project by a resident at Dia Studio and as self-imposed constraint carved completely by hand with chisels, saws, and mallets without the use of electric power tools as was the practice centuries ago.

It is one of four new sculptures made specfifically for the exhibition, Within/Between/Beneath/Upon at the Factory Contemporary Art Center in Ho Chi Minh City, featuring three artists (Phan Thao Nguyen, Le Hien Minh and Richard Streitmatter-Tran) curated by Bill Nguyen and Van Do running March 13 - June 6, 2021.
