Light Heavies

Light Heavies (2021) was inspired by several trips to the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture. The sculpture is a composite of several elements including a larger figurative element upon a pedestal base embedded with deep relief sculptures, while both characteristic of Cham sculpture, but constructed in industrial foam and recycled styrofoam packaging. The material choice highlights how the ruins of our current civilization may outlast us as a species when compared to the cultures of ancestors. The title also speaks to incongruence between the massive form (the original museum references in stone) and its lightweight density.

It is one of four new sculptures made specfifically for the exhibition, Within/Between/Beneath/Upon at the Factory Contemporary Art Center in Ho Chi Minh City, featuring three artists (Phan Thao Nguyen, Le Hien Minh and Richard Streitmatter-Tran) curated by Bill Nguyen and Van Do running March 13 - June 6, 2021.
