The series of watercolor paintings on paper, Hikikomori Blues (2019), accompany the site specific installation, Hikikomori (2019) at the Setouchi Triennale on Awashima island. Many of the paintings are based on the photographs found in the sailors school museum on Awashima featuring Tsunehichi Yamashita, born in 1902, who was included in a treasure of photographs capturing the maritime history of the island. Surprisingly, many were taken during a time in Vietnam featuring the life and peoples of a colonial period detailing the complex relationship between Indochina and Japan.
